The objectives of
the Crystallisation and Particle Science
(CPS) programme are to develop fundamental
understanding of crystallisation and formulation science and to
apply this knowledge to industrial and academic R&D as well as
existing industrial problems. A major focus for the research is the
application to pharmaceutical and fine chemical active ingredient
manufacture and formulation, although the fundamental knowledge can
be applied to problem solving for any chemical system.
Our current research efforts are
directed towards developing scientific understanding of what
determines crystal size, shape, form, and purity, as well as
particle surface properties, formulability and bioavailability. We
aim to apply the latest PAT (Process Analytical Technology) for the
monitoring and control of both crystallisation and solid handling
processes, and develop novel formulation such as nanocomposite
particles, microemulsions and co-crystals.
